Contemplative prayer is a way of awakening to the reality in which we are immersed. We rarely think of the air we breathe, yet is in us and around us all the time. In similar fashion, the presence of God penetrates us, is all around us, is always embracing us. Our awareness, unfortunately, is not awake to the dimension of reality. The purpose of prayer, the sacraments, and spiritual disciplines is to awaken us.

If we are designed to be in communion with God, if God is our Lover, then we have to indulge in the things that lovers do. The lover wishes always to be in the loved one's presence, and to gaze and to hold. The name for this loving regard is contemplation.
